What Claude Tag is and how it works
Claude Tag is Claude in your team's Slack workspace. In a channel, write @Claude and say what you need, and Claude replies in a thread under your message. It reads what is already in the channel first, so you do not have to explain the background. If your team has connected tools to that channel, such as Google Drive, a calendar, or a ticketing system, Claude can look things up and make changes in them too. Everyone in the channel can see the thread and reply in it to add detail or change what Claude is doing.
This is also what makes Claude Tag more than a chatbot you ask questions. Because it lives in the channel, it can keep working when no one has tagged it:
- Untagged replies(opens in new tab): in a channel where people post requests or problems, such as an IT help channel or a bug-report channel, you tell Claude once which messages to handle. From then on it replies to each new one on its own: answering the question, asking for missing details, or tagging the right owner.
- A standing responsibility(opens in new tab): Claude looks after something over days or weeks, for example keeping a launch checklist up to date and telling you when something slips.
- Routines(opens in new tab): you describe a task once, for example "post a summary of this channel every Monday at 9am," and Claude repeats it on that schedule.
What is different from Claude in a chat
Because Claude is a member of the channel, a few things are different from a chat with Claude on your own:
What it looks like
Reply in the thread(opens in new tab) to add context or change course; Claude reads every reply there, with no new tag. Configure(opens in new tab), under each of Claude's replies, opens the channel's settings.
What Claude Tag can do, with and without tools
Claude Tag does more than reply in the thread. It can take action directly in your team's tools(opens in new tab) and in your own(opens in new tab) (lessons 2(opens in new tab) and 3(opens in new tab)). And even with no tools connected, Claude can already do useful work wherever it has been added:
Where you can work with Claude Tag
You can work with Claude across your workspace:
- A DM: between you and Claude (lesson 2(opens in new tab)).
- A public channel: open to anyone on the team (lesson 3(opens in new tab)).
- A private channel: for a specific group (lesson 4(opens in new tab)).
Claude itself is the same in all three. What changes between them is who can join the work, what Claude can reach, and where it keeps what it learns. The next three lessons go over each, and lesson 5(opens in new tab) helps you choose between them.
